Snow farming
Did you know that there is a snow management system in Davos?
Snow farming has formed part of that since 2008. The term refers to preserving snow through the summer, so that it can be used to make a four-kilometre-long cross-country skiing trail at the end of October. What began as an experiment has now become a real success story.
Snow through the summer.
Every spring, a heap of snow is covered in sawdust and kept through the summer. Covered in this way, about 70 - 80% of the volume of the snow is preserved. In the autumn, this snow is used to prepare a cross-country skiing track, before any new snow can be produced. So, thanks to snow farming, an early start to the season can be guaranteed, regardless of the autumn temperatures.
Then there's only one thing to be said: Off to the skiing trail!
